The migration museum has a name: Museum Selma

The Museum Selma takes the stage! After a long phase of preparation, the name of the nationwide migration museum was presented to the public on October 22, 2024. At a press conference in Hall 70 in Colohne-Kalk, the future location of the museum, NRW Minister of the Interior Josefine Paul and DOMiD Managing Director Dr. Robert Fuchs lifted the curtain that covered the name and logo.

“We were looking for a unique name that is easy to remember, works internationally and fits the concept of our migration museum,” explains Timo Glatz, Head of Marketing at DOMiD. “The name 'Museum Selma' combines a Celtic meaning of 'beautiful view' with Arabic roots that mean 'harmony' and 'peace'.” With its roots in different languages and countries, the name Museum Selma already points to the polyphony of the planned migration museum. The choice of name also makes another statement: "The name Selma is a common female first name in dozens of countries around the world. We made a conscious decision to use a female name in order to strengthen the female perspective, especially in the often male-perceived phenomenon of migration", says Timo Glatz.

From 2029, the Museum Selma will invite visitors to experience the history of the immigration society in a new way. With over 150,000 objects, photos, documents and much more, the museum will make the diverse (post)migrant stories of this country visible: Germany, retold.
